Effects of Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes.

Extra Weight Brings Greater Risk

The National Institute of Health reports that over 65 percent of the citizens of America above the age of 21 are too fat or obese. For some years now, the obesity rate has been on an upward trend. Burdened with an excessive weight, the possibilities of suffering severe health conditions such as stroke, heart disease, some types of cancers and diabetes are greater.

The occurrence of type 2 diabetes in this country is on the increase, linked to the increase in the number of obese people. According to estimation by the ADA(American Diabetes Association), there are approximately 21 million diabetics, and 54 million with pre-diabetes diagnosis. To be diagnosed as Pre-diabetes , a person’€™s fasting blood sugar level is high, yet not high enough to be considered type 2 diabetes.

Obesity Leads to Insulin Resistance

Type 2 diabetes is linked to insulin resistance. Insulin is the essential hormone to sends glucose into the cells. However, due to a person being overweight, cells in his body are less receptive to insulin which has been sent by the pancreas. According to research, fat cells seem to be less receptive to insulin than cells of the muscles. So, when fat cells exceed muscle cells in the body, insulin is found to be generally less able to perform its function, resulting in sugar remaining in the bloodstream and not being absorbed by the cells for energy.

Losing the Fat Reduces the Risk

There is evidence to show, where health is concerned, that losing merely 6 percent of bodyweight can be rewarding. For most people, that means just a loss of approximately 8 pounds. For those who already suffer from diabetes, losing merely this amount of weight can retard the progress of diabetes. Such a small loss of body weight can also improve cholesterol and blood pressure levels.

Health problems increase with greater weight and there is also evidence to suggest that having most of the weight at the waist, giving the body an “€œapple-shape”€, can cause greater probability of developing diseases associated with obesity than people who are “pear-shaped”€ or have most of their weight at the hips as well as the thighs.

Live a Healthier and Longer Life with Reduce Weight

Some health problems are linked to weight gain and obesity. Problems with the gall-bladder, certain kinds of arthritis, gastroesophageal reflux disease(GRED), diseases of the lungs like sleep apnea, or liver diseases are possible health risks brought on by obesity. Therefore, it is wise to lose weight and have a healthier lifestyle. Imagine the number of diseases which can be delayed, if not prevented, by achieving the right weight.
